MOFT Dynamic Folio for iPad
Brilliant Idea or Just Hype?
If you’ve spent any time around iPads, you’ll know there’s no shortage of cases claiming to help you boost your productivity. But the MOFT Dynamic Folio might just be the strangest — and most interesting — iPad case I’ve ever used. It folds up like origami, ‘floats' your iPad off your desk, and claims to be the lightest “floating workstation” out there. It sounded mad enough that I had to try it for myself.
Unboxing
When it arrived, the unboxing experience gave a good first impression. MOFT had kindly sent me the Dynamic Folio itself along with a modular Quick-Release Apple Pencil holder, both items are neatly packaged with minimal fuss but clear attention to detail. "Work, create anywhere” is their mantra which I found stamped near the crease of the opening flap . It’s a small thing, but when companies take care over presentation, it often suggests they’ve taken care with the product too.
The Folio immediately stood out. The colour – a bright but pastel blue – looked fantastic. As I opened the case for the same time I was pleasently suprised by a pop-up book style guide showing over 20 folding angles you could create with it, along with a QR code to scan if you needed more help. It was all a little bit quirky but somehow appealing, as if you were about to learn a magic trick for your iPad.
Who Are MOFT?
If you’re unfamiliar with MOFT, the name stands for Mobile Office for Travelers. They're known for lightweight, origami-style accessories designed for people who work anywhere and everywhere — coffee shops, trains, busy kitchen tables (like mine, usually with two dogs sleeping undereath). MOFT's gear has always been about striking the balance between portability and usefulness, and the Dynamic Folio sticks firmly to that philosophy.
Design and Build Quality
Materials-wise, it’s impressive. The case is made from something MOFT call MOVAS — a mix of fibreglass and vegan leather (a quick online investigation suggets this doesn’t stand for anything just a fancy made-up name). It’s soft to the touch, resists fingerprints surprisingly well, and still feels durable enough to survive everyday knocks. Most importantly, it’s light. Adding this to my iPad barely made a difference to the overall weight, which is exactly what I want from an accessory like this. After months (nay, years) of using Apple’s Magic Keyboard case — which turns your light, elegant tablet into something resembling a small dumbbell — this was a refreshing change. (Yes, I recognise the obvious differences in use, but the keyboard is also the case so a comparison, I think, is marginally fair!)
Real-World Performance
Of course, looks and build quality are one thing — what matters is whether it actually works as advertised. MOFT’s promise is that this case transforms your iPad into a flexible, floating workstation. Bold claims. But I have to say, once you get the hang of folding it into the different modes, it’s surprisingly easy.
The Folio’s design allows for a range of setups, depending on what you're doing. “Theatre mode” props it up for easy video viewing or sharing something across a table as you flip it into “Dialogue mode. This adapts the iPad to a more natural writing angle — perfect for scribbling notes or tapping out a few paragraphs without craning your neck. “Creative mode” lets you place your phone at the top of the iPad for multitasking — ideal if you’re using your phone for references while sketching or studying. And “Browsing mode” turns the iPad into portrait mode for handsfree reading and browsing.
The beauty here isn’t just the variety — it’s how intuitive it is. Folding the case into position isn’t fiddly; the magnetic sections come with dots and dashes which you move the sections to fit these guides into place. In most positions that case feels stable, not precarious like some other clever-looking stands that wobble as soon as you touch the screen.
I can genuinely see how your workflow on your iPad with the case attached might be improved. The “floating" setup means better posture — no more leaning awkwardly over your iPad laid flat on a surface. Writing with the pencil is more comfortable. Reading is easier. Even video editing, admittedly you’d need to use an external keyboard and trackpad alongside the elevated iPad, feels more natural thanks to the raised viewing angle, when compared to the Apple Magic Keyboard at least.
A Few Minor Quirks
It’s not without minor quirks. There’s a small learning curve if you want to master all 20 folding angles. You’ll probably end up picking two or three that suit your working style and ignoring the rest. And if you’re someone who needs a built-in keyboard every day, you’ll still need a separate Bluetooth keyboard, because the Dynamic Folio prioritises lightness and flexibility over replicating a laptop setup.
There’s also the fact that, as of writing, it’s only available via Kickstarter at the moment. MOFT are an established company with a good track record, so that doesn't concern me too much and I wouldn’t hesitate supporting the campaign, but some might prefer waiting for it to land in retail stores.
Final Thoughts
The most important thing to note about the Dynmaic Folio is that it’s clearly designed for people who actually use their iPads — not just for scrolling social media, but for real work: writing, designing, editing, planning. It’s a proper tool, not a gimmick. If your iPad is your daily driver like mine is, it’s absolutely worth considering. If it’s mainly a Netflix and TikTok machine, you probably don’t need this level of flexibility.
MOFT’s Dynamic Folio won’t be for everyone, but for serious iPad users, it’s clever, lightweight, genuinely useful, and (for once) feels like an accessory that was designed with care rather than just aesthetics.
